The Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in partnership with the Pasadena/Altadena Ivy Foundation recently sponsored the 29th Annual Fashionetta Salute to Mothers and Scholarship Luncheon & Fashion Show where they honored Ms. Tonita Fernandez as the Mother of the Year and awarded over $22,000 in scholarships to 12 college bound students from the San Gabriel Valley.
It was a fun filled day where there was something for everyone. Unique vendors offered a variety of shopping options that included homemade soaps to art to jewelry and clothing. Aundrae Russell of KJLH 102.3 returned as the emcee and delighted the crowd with his engaging personality and witty jokes.
The day included an amazing creative dance routine performed by RMH Movement and a Samba dance by Malandro ‘N Motion. During the fashion show, the audience was wowed by the fashions of both Casonna and Katula. Both designers had something for everyone as their clothes met the needs of different ages, sizes, shapes and occasions.
While Fashionetta is a fun event that strives to entertain our audience, the main purpose of this event is to award the scholarship recipients. There were 12 Scholarship and Book Award recipients that come from a variety of high schools like John Muir, Pasadena, Mayfield, Maranatha and more. The Scholarships were awarded in STEAM, Social Justice, Special Needs, Young African American Male and Most Improved GPA. After hearing the accomplishments of all these young people, you can’t help but be excited about their future.
The second objective of Fashionetta is to honor the Mother of the Year during this season of recognizing Mothers. It was truly an honor for the Pasadena Chapter of AKA to be able to shine a spotlight on this year’s Mother of the Year, Ms. Tonita Fernandez. She is truly a remarkable woman who is making a difference in our community in all aspects of her life. The outpouring support from her family, friends, colleagues, students and their parents was heartwarming. They truly made a beautiful picture as they all stood on the stage during her moment of honor.
The Pasadena Chapter of AKA in partnership with the Pasadena/Altadena Ivy Foundation are engaged in the community making a difference throughout the year. Please join us in making a difference in our community.
