The Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. spent Martin Luther King (MLK) Day providing services to the Pasadena Community. Dinner is an important meal in the day that gives families a chance to sit down, talk and learn about the day of each member. It is a time for sharing, but due to a variety of reasons, this meal does not take place in all homes or there may not be enough food on the table.
The AKA’s then moved onto Union Station Homeless Services, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Pasadena that is committed to helping homeless men, women and children rebuild their lives.. In order to support Union ‘s mission, the Pasadena Chapter of AKA donated 260 items that included coats, blankets and seasonal wraps (hats, gloves and scarves). Being warm is a basic necessity that we all have and this donation seeks to provide to this underserved population in our city.
MLK Day of Service Provides Food to Veterans and Coats to the Homeless
The Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day with service in our community. Dr. King inspired so many people and touched so many lives. His impact on the world through his ministry earned a National Holiday in his name that celebrates and honors him as it keeps his dream alive. Racism and equality were two areas that Dr. King ministered about during his time and we must continue to lead by example because we still struggle with these issues in our communities. We still have a lot of work to do, and as dedicated members of the Pasadena Chapter of AKA, we are committed to serving all mankind which means giving back to those that are in need.
The organizations continue to make a dent in this effort by providing $25 grocery gift cards to 45 Veterans in the Pasadena/Altadena Community. They also delivered coats, blankets, socks, scarves and gloves to Union Station Homeless Shelter. It warms my heart and makes me smile to see the happy tears of recipients that received grocery store gift cards and clothing.
We know that service and giving back to others is a strong way to make a difference in our community and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is passionate about serving and doing the work to continue to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
